The origins of Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) can be traced back to 1954.
During a family camping trip in the Okanagan that year, a young girl became lost and a group of BC Civil Defense Volunteers from the community initiated a search effort.
“Their success in finding the child underscored the necessity for a formal search and rescue organization,” explains COSAR spokesperson Ed Henczel.
“Since then, COSAR has played a critical role in search and rescue missions across the Okanagan region and beyond.”
That means 2024 is COSAR’s 70th birthday and the milestone will be celebrated with a special event from 1-4 pm today at the organization’s headquarters at 4680 Old Vernon Rd.
COSAR president Brad Trites says the group is “incredibly proud” to reach the 70-year milestone.
“Our volunteers have been at the heart of this organization, showing an unshakable commitment to rescuing and reassuring,” says Trites.
“This celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the courage, dedication and humility that has defined COSAR since its inception.”
The event will honour COSAR’s rich history of safeguarding the community, the dedication of its countless volunteers over the years and the support of so many who have contributed to the non-profit organization.
Attendees will have the chance to meet the team members and see a showcase of notable missions over the years and equipment that has been used in rescue operations.
“This event is also a way to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has stood by us – whether as a volunteer, a supporter or someone we’ve had the privilege of rescuing,” added Trites.
Today's celebration is free of charge and refreshments will be served for those in attendance.
